We might have the image of the older woman tending her vegetables, but the retirement garden remains one of the most popular activities for the over 50 crowd.
Taking care of our bodies becomes more important as does a healthy senior diet. As a result of the latest news, organic gardening is gaining acceptance.
Based in perhaps one of the most beautiful locations within the United States, World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (www.WWOOF.org) is a volunteer organization that broadens its participants’ knowledge of the workings of organic gardening and farming. In addition, volunteers also gain a better understanding of the Hawaiian culture and countryside.
WWOOF participants have the opportunity to stay from 1-3 weeks or more with any of the 150 hosts spread across the 5 main islands. The WWOOF hosts provide their visitors with accommodations and meals, and in return WWOOFers lend a helping hand where there is work to be done. The hosts are responsible for making each chore into an interesting, unique, and educational experience. Work usually lasts from 4-6 hours a day, 5-5 ½ days a week. Many participants choose to move from one host to another after their allotted work period is over.
There is no experience necessary to partake in the WWOOFing experience, just an open mind and the willingness to learn. WWOOFers must also have a conversational understanding of the English language. Additionally, the only age restriction within the program states that participants must be at least 16 years of age; WWOOF will accept anyone from age 20 to 120! Again, the only requirement is that you bring along an open mind.
Information regarding cost, contacts (phone numbers, email addresses, etc.), and other related questions is available at the Organic Farms website: www.wwoofhawaii.org.
It is also possible to become a WWOOF host through the website. Simply navigate to the site’s FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) section and scroll down to the section that contains the “Host Questions.”
