Ed. Note: Most women struggle with fashion trends throughout there lives. It just seems like our bodies don't match what's for sale in the stores. That difficulty increases as we get older. Author Sherrie Mathieson has written two books; STEAL THIS STYLE: Moms and Daughters Swap Wardrobe Secrets: Looks That Make Hip Classic and Classic Cool and Forever Cool: How To Achieve Ageless, Youthful and Modern Personal Style for Women and Men to help both women and men over 50 feel better about what they wear.
Why did you write these book? Every day I was meeting women who were over 50 yet still wanted to look their most attractive—and appropriate. They asked, “What can we borrow from the youthful styles we see everywhere in stores, magazines, and on our daughters?” At the same time, daughters wanted to be proud of their moms and often asked, “Can our moms dress so well that we gain a style inheritance?” In my new book, Steal This Style: Moms and Daughters Swap Wardrobe
Secrets, I try a fresh and thoughtful approach to fashion trends by describing in detail the styles and items that real mothers, of all backgrounds and sizes, and their grown daughters should and shouldn’t share. I illustrate what so many women desire—a combination of high-end style with lasting value.
My previous book Forever Cool: How to Achieve Ageless, Youthful, and
Modern Personal Style introduced the worst/deadliest "sins" and also discussed the concept of cross-generational dressing in one of the beginning chapters (including a father/son example).
The idea proved a fun bonding experience, providing moms with more youthful looks and their daughters with style inheritances they can finally be proud of (and today we are in danger of losing sight of a good style inheritance. One of my favorite quotes is "If you cant be a good example--you'll have to be a horrible warning!"
What do you want your readers to learn or take away from reading this book? I believe that while fashion trends are fleeting, great style is timeless. My book is all about what’s truly ageless. With "STEAL THIS STYLE", I hope to give women the insights and tools they need to look and feel just as good as their daughters!
What research did you do to write this book? Since I work as a style consultant--I'm in "the field" almost daily, with clients like my readers. I keep up to date (with an eye always to the future as well) by reading varied magazines/newspapers, online sites I believe in, seeing movies, and following my own advice in the "Get Inspired" chapter. I'm an inveterate "people" observer everywhere I go--and forever curious. I expose myself to all things to do with style and aesthetics in general. Who was this book written for? My books are for boomers and even those older people-- it's never too late to re-asses, be open to learn and keep modern. But truthfully everything in my books is about the principles of great style (not simply fleeting fashions and trends)--which everyone at any age can benefit from, and should know from a young age.
What problem does this book solve for your reader? I wanted to discuss smart style strategies to inspire women (and men to, in "Forever Cool"), particularly those over 50. I provide remedies for common fashion mishaps and timely advice, such as the key wardrobe pieces women should invest in during this economic downturn. I share subtle tricks to hide your age and provide ways that you can hone your taste to have enviable style that expresses who you are—today!
What has been the reaction to the book? Incredible! Women-especially those older than 44, are caught in an "identity crisis" they are starving for good style advice and a guide to resources.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your book or experience in writing it? I decided to photograph every style point I wanted to make, in my now trademarked "Never Cool" and "Forever Cool" fashion. Most people eagerly flip through the photos of both my books and are usually highly amused by the before shots. But I urge my readers to truly read the book from beginning to end--in order to really benefit from it. My books look deceptively simple--but they are multi-layered, chock full of information-- and were written to provoke intelligent, creative thoughts on style and how it can be attained.
