As women age, it hard to reconcile all of the crazy things that happen to our bodies. Women focus on covering what is sagging, dragging or drooping and often do this at the expense of fit. Here are five things women in their 50s and 60s can do to still look stylish, but age appropriate:
1. Make a good tailor your new best friend. Fit is key to pulling off a polished look. A woman of any size who is wearing a properly fitted garment instantly looks polished. When shopping for clothes find pieces that fit the largest part of your body and then ask a tailor to make it fit everywhere else. For example, my mom (67) has a large chest. If she didn’t she would probably be a size 8 top. However, she often has to size up to a 10 and then have a tailor take the top in at the waist. Women can often revamp their existing wardrobe with a visit to the tailor!
2. Remember that jewelry, scarves and other accessories always fit. It can be difficult for women in their 50s and 60s to accept their new, often “expanding” bodies. Jewelry and other accessories are easy ways to have fun with fashion and trends without dealing with the stress of finding the right fit. We all have “fat” days when nothing seems to fit. Fat days are the perfect days to wear an all black ensemble and razzle and dazzle with fun accessories. Invest in some good statement necklaces, earrings and bracelets that can be used to dress up any outfit. You can find inexpensive pieces on QVC and HSN.
3. Invest in good body shape wear. Shape wear can smooth lumps and bumps and is a must for every women no matter what age. Women and their 50s and 60s may remember the shape wear of yesteryear as uncomfortable, itchy and restricting. However, today’s shape wear like Spanx is soft, comfortable and full of options. Assess what portions of your body you feel could use a little smoothing and work from there. For example, have a little back fat, find some camisole shapers; a belly, use shorts shapers.
4. Get an instant boob lift with a good bra. Every women who is facing a changing body should see a bra fit specialist stat! All Nordstrom stores have a bra fit specialist and offer services for free. You can also google, “bra fit specialist” and your city or town name and you should find a few specialists. As our bodies change, so does our bra size and wearing the right sized bra can make you look ten pounds slimmer and ten years younger.
5. Fall in love with with the v neck and wrap dress. V necks and wrap dresses are universally flattering for every figure. If you don’t own some v neck sweater and tops or a wrap dress, you can find these staples at a big box discounter such as Target, Kmart or Walmart. Look for solid colors and fabric that don’t cling.
There is no reason why women in their 50s and 60s should stylish and have fun with fashion!
