Where to Retire: Brevard, North Carolina
|
| |
| |
Ed. Note: Where to Retire shares desired destinations for those wishing to relocate after retirement. Provided by author Warren R. Bland, these summaries offer a quick overview of the most desired retirement communities.
By Warren Bland
Brevard is a picture postcard-perfect community of lovely but unpretentious frame and brick homes on sloping tree-lined streets surrounding a thriving, traditional downtown business district. Thanks to Brevard College and the Brevard Music Festival, higher culture is as abundant in town as outdoor recreation is in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains presenting an active retirement location.
Landscape: With Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains forming its northwestern boundary, Brevard’s setting is unusually beautiful. Except for patches of farmland on the valley floor, the town and the lower slopes of the mountains are wooded.
Climate: Brevard’s climate is mild yet stimulating. It features four clearly defined seasons, frequent changes in weather and moderate levels of sunshine.
Quality of Life: Excellent. Historic downtown Brevard is charming, economically healthy, peaceful, clean and uncrowded. The town is well planned and its neighborhoods reflect a combination of moderate affluence, good taste and a desire to preserve the community’s unique character.
Housing: Median prices of single-family residences in the city run between $140,000 and $180,000, with condominiums being half as expensive. New homes outside the city are priced between $120,000 and $200,000.
Goods and Services: Groceries, utilities, transportation, health care and miscellaneous goods and services are priced at or slightly below national norms.
Taxes: State and local taxes are about 10.1% of income compared to the U.S. average of 9.7%. Property, sales and excise taxes are below national norms whereas income taxes are above average.
Transportation: Most residents drive, walk, cycle, or use a dial-a-ride service. Jet service is possible from Asheville Regional Airport and Greenville–Spartanburg Airport. Amtrak service is available in Greenville.
Retail Services: The Brevard downtown district offers a full range of goods and services, including a farmers market. Discount shopping is available at Kmart and Wal-Mart.
Health Care: Transylvania Community Hospital provides good, routine medical care. Nearby Asheville offers additional comprehensive medical resources.
Community Services: Brevard, Transylvania County, Brevard College and several social and fraternal organizations furnish high-quality services to residents.
Cultural and Educational Activities: Strong cultural programs are ongoing throughout the year. At Brevard College and the Brevard campus of Blue Ridge Community College, one can select from more than 250 noncredit courses in a variety of topics.
Recreational Activities: Brevard and nearby areas offer many and varied recreational choices. At Pisgah National Forest, which borders Brevard, you’ll find unlimited outdoor recreation. Several excellent restaurants, a one-screen theater and a wonderful 1950s-atmosphere soda shop offer additional diversions downtown.
Work and Volunteer Activities: Part-time jobs are plentiful, and volunteers find fulfilling work at a number of community facilities.
Crime Rates and Public Safety: Brevard consistently rates as one of America’s safest towns, owing to a combination of the town’s small size, favorable population demographics and the good work of the city’s excellent police force.
Conclusion: Brevard is a near-perfect retirement community for those wishing to live in a charming, friendly and safe small town offering an abundance of amenities typically found only in much larger cities.
