Where to Retire: Boulder, Colorado
|
| |
| |
Ed. Note: Where to Retire shares desired destinations for those wishing to relocate after retirement. Provided by author Warren R. Bland, these summaries offer a quick overview of the most desired retirement communities.
By Warren Bland
Boulder has matured from its early role as a center for cattle ranching on the plains and a base for gold prospecting in the Rocky Mountains to its present status as an exquisite small city offering virtually everything required for an active retirement.
Landscape: Boulder is situated on a gently sloping plain at the foot of the Flatiron Range, the craggy foothills of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Boulder’s site is spectacular from almost any vantage point.
Climate: Boulder has an invigorating four-season climate characterized by modest precipitation, abundant sunshine, and marked day-to-day and seasonal changes in weather.
Quality of Life: Excellent. The community’s tight land use controls prevent outward sprawl and well-treed streets, beautiful parks and greenways, the vibrant Pearl Street Mall and the beautiful University of Colorado campus are other niceties.
Housing: Housing costs are about 60% above the national average. Prices can be expected to remain high because anti-growth policies restrict the rate of new construction.
Goods and Services: Health care, groceries and transportation costs are above national norms. Miscellaneous goods and services are priced 3% below their national averages. Utilities are a bargain at a cost about 25% below average.
Taxes: State and local taxes in Boulder are 8.8% of income compared to the U.S. average of 9.7%. State income taxes are a little above the national average but property, sales and excise taxes are lower than average.
Transportation: Most residents drive but buses and shuttles are popular alternatives. Denver International Airport, 42 miles away, provides jet service. Rail and bus are also available in Denver from Amtrak and Greyhound.
Retail Services: The Pearl Street Mall, Boulder’s revitalized historic downtown, is the heart and soul of the community. Flatiron Crossing Shopping Center, nine miles away, provides traditional mall shopping.
Health Care: Boulder Community Hospital is the city’s major medical center. Additional services are only 30 minutes away in Denver. Community Services: The city and county of Boulder, the University of Colorado and local religious and community organizations offer an amazing array of services.
Cultural and Educational Activities: The culturally and educationally inclined will never want for things to do in Boulder. The schedule of musical, theatrical, and visual arts events and educational opportunities is extremely rich and full.
Recreational Activities: Whether your interests are skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, inline skating, tennis, volleyball, rock climbing, golfing, water-skiing or whitewater kayaking, Boulder can accommodate you. You can enjoy varsity sports locally and visit the spectacular Eldorado and Golden Gate Canyon State Parks and Rocky Mountain National Park.
Work and Volunteer Activities: Opportunities for work and volunteerism are plentiful. Crime Rates and Public Safety: Property crime rates are low. Significantly, Boulder’s violent crime rate is fully 50% below the national average and most residents do not hesitate to walk its streets day or night.
Conclusion: Boulder is one of the most sophisticated small cities in America and a wonderful place for a retirement community.
