As senior adults search for new ways to learn and grow, more organizations will offer programs to accommodate them. OASIS is one such program that is gaining popularity around the country for adult learning.
Started in 1982, OASIS was developed to help senior adults continue to be active and productive members of society. Currently OASIS is found in 26 cities and reaches over 350,000 participants who are interested in lifelong learning. Macy’s Department have partnered with the organization by providing space for offices, classrooms and lounge areas. OASIS has additional sponsors through colleges, health care institutions and businesses. It has become important to the senior community.
OASIS offers classes covering a wide range of topics. A recent catalog listed classes in: Yoga, Mental Aerobics, Personal Finance, Adventures in Theater, Current Events, and Writing for the Fun of it.
In addition to providing lifelong learning opportunities, OASIS provides occasions for the senior adults to be senior volunteers in their community. While many volunteer opportunities exist in helping the OASIS organization, many locations support community outreach.
