Be Your Own Boss

Many active seniors worldwide are deciding to pursue their dream of starting a business after retiring. Entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly popular for the senior new to retirement. As jobs in retirement become harder to find, the boomer generation is turning to self-employment. In addition to the flexible hours and greater freedom, owning a small business gives you the opportunity to be your own boss. It can greatly add to your retirement income security. You may be surprised at just how many small businesses currently exist in the United States; as many as three-quarters of American businesses are run by self-employed professionals. Owning a home based business can be a wise decision if you are well prepared and understand exactly what is required. Before you rush out to start a home business, you should answer the following questions. They will help you to decide if you are well suited for this type of business venture.
How bold are you?
Starting your own company requires a bold and independent senior who is not afraid to make tough decisions and sell themselves and their company unabashedly. If you are meek or timid, you will most likely have trouble obtaining new clients and succeeding with your new business.
Are you prepared to commit yourself completely?
Let’s face it – running a home business requires a lot of your time and energy. You will need to spend many hours and devote yourself to building and growing your business. Many small businesses fail within the first five years, partly because of a lack of commitment. You need to be dedicated enough to survive any problems or pitfalls you experience when you are first starting out.
What is your current financial situation?
This is another important question you need to ask if you are considering starting a business. Most new businesses take a while before they become profitable; you may end up spending much more than you expect during the first few years of operation. If you don’t have enough money to fund this new venture, you should consider other options. You do not want to jeopardize your retirement pay base. The goal is to supplement your existing finances.
How much prior business experience do you have?
Many people have lots of great creative ideas and passion for their new business. The problem is they may not have much prior business experience. This often leads to failed businesses. If you don’t have sufficient knowledge about marketing, management, accounting, sales and distribution, starting a business may not be the best decision.
Are you a disciplined individual?
Last but not least, you need to be very disciplined if you run a home business. There will be no bosses telling you to arrive at a certain hour and nobody to make the tough decisions. You need to be able to budget your time effectively, establish your priorities and work independently in order to succeed as an entrepreneur.
Many retiring baby boomers are entering the new retirement careers of starting home based businesses.
