Times are definitely changing and so is the way we conduct business. There are many new business terms that are gaining popularity. For example, you may have heard the term social entrepreneurship or social entrepreneur. The terms first appeared in the 1960s and 1970s, although they weren’t very common until the 1980s and 1990s. A social entrepreneur is an individual who utilizes entrepreneurial ideas and devises innovative solutions to society’s social problems. The boomers retirement is different as many explore ways to make money and be of service. Social entrepreneurship is the new retirement work. There is a desire to change elderly activities of former generations. The boomer generation wants to be an involved citizen, senior active in helping solve problems facing the community.

Social entrepreneurship can exist in the private sector, government, citizen groups or nonprofit agencies. The movement involves individuals who are realists and visionaries and who present understandable and ethical ideas to help others. Social entrepreneurs are determined to initiate social change, and they gauge their success in terms of the impact on society, rather than dollars and cents. They often strive to make significant positive changes in their industry or field. Bill Drayton sums up what makes these people unique: “Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish, or teach how to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing industry.”

An example of a famous social entrepreneur is Michael Young. He was instrumental in establishing more than 60 new organizations all over the world; he eventually created a series of UK Schools for Social Entrepreneurs to help others continue in his footsteps. Florence Nightingale who established the first nursing school and created many modern nursing practices also falls under the umbrella of social entrepreneurship. Other famous social entrepreneurs include Margaret Sanger, the founder of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, John Muir, a conservationist and naturalist who founded the Sierra Club and established the National Park System and Vinoba Bhave who founded the Land Gift Movement in India which has distributed more than 7,000,000 acres of land to the impoverished people of his country.

Social entrepreneurship is changing business the boomers retirement, because committed individuals are creating positive solutions to improve society. They use their business knowledge, entrepreneurial spirit and creative vision to profit people, not just bank accounts and pocketbooks. The business sector has known for a long time that fresh ideas in the hands of an entrepreneur are very powerful. The social sector is now starting to realize the very same thing.
